Day 1 - When Life Starts Telling You Who You Are

We’re talking about identity this week

Life has a way of talking to you.

And if you’re not careful, after a while, you’ll start believing everything it said.

There are seasons where life feels loud. Not always in obvious ways, but in the quiet accumulation of experiences that slowly begin to shape how you see yourself.

You go through enough rejection, and you start wondering if maybe something is wrong with you.

You get overlooked enough, and suddenly you’re questioning whether you matter.

You spend years being the one everybody depends on, and before you know it, you don’t even know who you are when you’re not doing something for somebody else.

And then life keeps happening.

You make a mistake.

You lose something.

A relationship changes.

A door closes.

And while all of that is happening around you, something else begins happening inside of you.

You start interpreting yourself through what you’ve experienced.

Not just remembering what happened—but forming conclusions about who you are because of it.

And that’s the part I want us to slow down and pay attention to this week.

Because there is what happened to you…

and then there is what you started believing about yourself because it happened.

Those are not always the same thing.

Somewhere along the way, life may have started teaching you things about yourself that you never consciously agreed to, but somehow began living under.

Maybe life taught you:

I’m not enough.

I’m too much.

People always leave.

I have to prove myself.

I have to hold everything together.

If I’m not needed, I don’t matter.

And the thing about beliefs like these is that they don’t always announce themselves as beliefs.

They settle in quietly.

They repeat themselves through your thoughts, your reactions, your relationships, your decisions.

And after carrying them long enough, they stop sounding like thoughts.

They start sounding like identity.

“This is just who I am.”

But is it?

Or have you been looking at yourself through the lens of what you’ve lived through?

Because your experiences can shape you.

They can affect you.

They can leave real marks on the way you think, respond, and relate to others.

That part is real.

But they were never meant to become the final authority on who you are.

Life can describe you, but it was never meant to define you.

And this is where the shift begins.

For the next five days, we’re going to start separating what happened to you from who Christ says you are.

Not to dismiss your experiences.

Not to minimize what you’ve been through.

But to challenge the idea that your pain gets to have the final word over your identity.

Because sometimes, before you can return to the truth…

you first have to recognize what has been speaking louder than it.

So here’s the question for today:

What did life teach you to believe about yourself that you need to bring back before Christ?

Tomorrow, we’re talking about the version of you that learned how to survive.
